Father

Toward a Biography of a "Likely Negro"

“And Ham …. saw the nakedness of his father...” ― The Bible, Genesis IX

«Pas de monstres, et pas de héros.» ― Flaubert

My family’s life, summarized: From slavery to slavery in three generations.

Having, along with mine, decided to put Father's life in the public domain, this section is dedicated to him. For better and, perhaps, for worse as well...

I'll be adding to this page, fragment by fragment, as I come across pieces of his life. Included will be:

  1. Reasons
  2. Unanswered questions
  3. People Father knew
  4. Places Father visited
  5. His disappearances
  6. Documents originating with him
  7. Documents about him
  8. Results of FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests
  9. Anecdotes
  10. Pictures

My reasons for delving into his life are, in part, motivated by the presence of what I dimly perceive to be increasingly long shadows in his past. I have questions, beginning with the following.

1: Reasons:

2: Unanswered questions:

  1. A dead, rotting fish was put on the steps of our house in Orléans, France when we lived there in the sixties; something similar later happened to my therapist, Victor Morton, in the nineties. What occasioned this?
  2. Also in Orléans: Father made a visit to London for custom suits, he was gone several days. Was this the only purpose of visit.
  3. In Neu-Ulm, Germany: Our family visited the Bodensee/Lake Constance/Bad Sachen/Lindau for several days. It was there that mother and I met a French businessman there on vacation. Did something happen between Father and that French businessman?
  4. In Germany: Father along with the rest of us met several Iranian expatriates in some cafes sometime during the reign of the Shah. Though mother was curious about how Father knew them, he was evasive. Why?
  5. While in the US: Father mentioned he’d only been in the US Army for three month before being released. Again, he remained silent on how this came about
  6. An odd comment, unsolicited, was once made by a former PC repair customer by the name of Eric Rice: “I know all about your father.” This said in a scornful voice. Why this remark?
  7. Extent of involvement of his family (if any) e.g. aunt Irene?
  8. A painting I still have in which he holds a newspaper showing him in a curious pose, when mother questioned him about this, he was vague in his answer
  9. There has been a near-total stonewalling on information about Father; both from him and US Government. Why?
